Naida-Michal Brandl, PhD, Associate Professor, University of Zagreb, recounts the resilient narrative of Croatia's Jewish community amidst shifting historical tides. From Ancient Roman times to the Venetian Republic, the Ottoman and Habsburg Empires, Croatia's Jewish community thrived, and faced challenges. The Early Modern Period saw flourishing communities under the Venetian Republic and the independent Republic of Dubrovnik situated on the borderland with the mighty Ottoman Empire, while the Habsburg Empire brought both opportunities and discrimination.
The 20 th century, however, brought tragedy with the Holocaust, yet stories of resistance emerged too. Despite immense losses, post-war Croatia witnessed Jewish rebuilding and contributions to the nation's recovery.
Today Croatia's Jewish Community continues to enrich its cultural landscape, while honoring its heritage. This narrative of endurance, resilience, and cultural enrichment stands as a testament to the abiding spirit of the Croatian Jewish Community throughout history.
